Starting An Organization From Scratch #6 Goals & Objectives

I am naturally very structured and prefer to work with systems and patterns. I like to have a big picture of what am doing and possibly the expected outcome. Although I hate routine, I like to have a clear plan of action. I am open to change and new ideas more so if it's structured and we'll thought through. Over the years, I have come to learn that not everyone is like me.

Starting and growing an organization is no simple piece of work, it requires diligence, consistence and having the right systems in place. Having a great vision and mission statement will not automatically ensure the success of your organization. Strategies must be developed to support the mission. Goals and clear objectives must be put in place in order to track progress and impact.

The mission statement shades light on how the organization intends to achieve it's vision for creating social impact. This must further be broken down into sizable goals and objectives that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound. Goals must be set in line with specific program interventions. They must be aligned to project outcomes.

It is advisable to start with organisational goals then move to specific project goals. Organisational goals should encompass what the organization wants to achieve at the end of the day while project goals should be tied to a specific project within the program. Ensure that the goals are measurable so as to enable you track impact. Note that often times objectives and goals are used interchangeably to mean the same thing.

Once the goals have been developed, take time to review them with the people who will be implementing the various projects to ensure that they make sense to them. If the implementation team doesn't know the project goals then you risk carrying out alot of activities without any real impact. They will also not know what success indicators to look out for and track. The more specific your goals are, the higher your chances of fulfilling your mission.
