Love Culture # 16 Role Modeling

All good things ought to be shared and emulated by others. When you live a life of love, it is inevitably worth emulating. Just like children learn by observing, you will be surprised to learn how many people are actually watching your life and emulating the good there is even without your notice.

Intentional living involves being intentional about the kind of examples and standards that you set for other people. As long as you are in a position of leadership, people will emulate you one way or the other. The quality of your life is evidenced in the character of those you influence. You have to be intentional about setting the right example for all those that look up to you in some way.

Our society today is void of credible role models, no wonder children and youth have resorted to celebrities and social media personalities as their role models. Life is getting faster and time is becoming a more scarce resource by the day. Bottom line is that everyone has a role model in their life. They could be a parent, a friend, a teacher, or a sports hero.

As adults, we often seek positive role models in people who have unique qualities we’d like to possess. By examining these people’s behavior, words and accomplishments, we determine those characteristics that we value most.

A role model is hard to define, because it can be different for everyone. Who your role model is depends as much on you as it does on the person you admire. Often, it is someone you would like to be like when you get older, or someone who does something you find hard to do.

Typically, a role model is brave, smart, strong, kind, thoughtful and fun. Not that every role model is perfect. Unless it is someone out of a storybook, role models are people who might be outstanding in only one or two areas. Or maybe it is someone who is far less than perfect, but is working to improve himself or herself.

Before we start complaining about what is lacking and missing, how about we each decided that moving forward we shall be a role model for other people. You should remember that you can only role model that which is in sync with your true values and passion. To be a role model you will have to be true to yourself before you can be true to others.

Before you look for someone to look up to, dare to be that someone for somebody else. You are the answer to someone’s need and you can be that pillar of strength and encouragement for others as they find their way through life. You can be a role model because you already have what it takes. Good things are worth sharing, role model the good in you for others to emulate.
