    Love culture #3 Loving Unconditionally

I have been a lot of places and I have seen many things in my few years under the sun but one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the way people talk and act when they are in love more so if it is for the very first time. One person told me; “it is beyond words, what I feel for this person” I could easily relate and understand what they meant by that statement. Love is the deepest need that every human being has and in pursuit to meet this need, people will go to great length just to get a taste of love. Another person said; “Love makes the world go round”, whichever way you think of it love is the foundation that holds the entire universe together. It’s the hinge upon which life itself swings.

Unfortunately love happens to be one of the misunderstood concepts about life in spite of being one of the most written and sang about theme. What many people perceive to be love is far from the reality of what love actually is. Our perception of love is shaped by our experiences and environments. Love is way much broader than the momentary feeling that seemingly make time come to a standstill. In understanding the concept of love, we must seek to first understand the aspect of unconditional love.

Unconditional love is, in essence, true love -- so different from the kind of love most of us have known all our lives that it deserves a definition of its own. Unconditional love is caring about the happiness of another person without any thought for what we might get for ourselves. It’s unconditional love when other people care about our happiness unconditionally.

Unconditional love allows you to love yourself first, so that you have the strength of heart and mind to give the same to another person. Friends and family can be completely unconditional with their love for you, however it is pretty rare; we are programmed to be conditional, to expect something in return for our love. I cannot say with complete confidence that we don’t place some degree of conditions on almost all our communication and interactions. We are quite specifically conditioned to only give love when we are reciprocated, and most often according to what we think is worthy of our love. Unconditional love is not a loan needing to be repaid, but a string-less gift of the heart - a gesture where only you benefit directly.

Loving unconditionally is more a behavior versus a feeling. Loving is the act of extending ourselves, vulnerabilities and all, into uncharted emotional territory with the belief that regardless of the outcome, we want to benefit another person. Imagine love as a behavior in and of itself, with the satisfaction being that feeling you get when you act a certain way for them, not when someone else acts a certain way to you. This is what the love culture is all about, lets embrace it, live it and be it.
